This Dhanteras festival also marks the very first day of Diwali celebrations, which is then followed by Chhoti Diwali, Diwali, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj.

The word Dhanteras is a combination of two words - 'Dhan' which means money or wealth and 'Teras' that represents the thirteenth day of the Krishna Paksha, which is the dark aspect of the Lunar Month Kartik.
