Meaning of Dhanteras
The word Dhanteras is a combination of two words - 'Dhan' which means money or wealth and 'Teras' that represents the thirteenth day of the Krishna Paksha, which is the dark aspect of the Lunar Month Kartik.

Dhanteras is measured to be the most favorable day to shop for jewelry and costly items. This is because; in India, it is believed that buying precious items like jewelry, gemstones, and even metal household products on the day of Dhanteras brings more wealth and prosperity to the family. Some of the people even purchase silver or brass utensils and keep them in the East direction of their residence.
On Dhanteras, devotees worship Lakshmi Ji, who is the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. On the evening of Dhanteras, devotees perform Lakshmi puja and light candles and divas.
