Doctor’s Day is celebrated on different dates in different countries. In India, we celebrate doctor’s day on the 1st July every year. The US celebrates it on the 30th March, Brazil on 18th October, Canada on 1st May. In Cuba, Doctor’s day is a holiday on the 3rd December and in Nepal on 4th March, among other countries.
On this amazing occasion of Indian Doctors Day, let’s have a look at things you might not know about why we celebrate it in our country.
National Doctor's Day is celebrated to honor the legendary physician and West Bengal's second Chief Minister, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy whose birth and death anniversary coincides on the same day 1st of July. This day we pay tribute to the whole medical profession and to highlight the importance of doctors in our lives. The first National Doctor's Day was established on year 1991 by the Central Government to pay honor to Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy and celebrated as doctor’s day on 1st July.
Dr.Bidhan Chandra Roy was born on 1 July, 1882 and also died coincidently on the same date in 1962. On 4 February, 1961, he was honored with the India's highest civilian award “Bharat Ratna”.
About Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy
He was a great and respected physician and a renowned freedom fighter. He was the second Chief Minister of Bengal and remained around 14 years in his post from 1948 to until his death in 1962. He was also considered as the great architect of West Bengal. The five cities of West Bengal were also founded by him namely: Durgapur, Bidhannagar, Ashokenagar, Kalyani and Habra. He was also a member of Brahmo Samaj. He was the alumnus of the University of Calcutta. The Union Government had also instituted an award to his memory. He played an important role in the establishment of Indian Medical Association (IMA) and also in the establishment of the Medical Council of India (MCI) in 1928.

Red Carnations:
The red carnation flower is a symbol for the Doctor’s day. You can give it to your favorite doctor on this day. A bouquet of carnations will bring happiness to the dull and rushed feel of a doctor’s office. If red carnations are not available, you can replace them with any red flowers of your choice.
Greeting Cards:
Nowadays, greeting cards are slightly old fashioned. But this does not take away the happy feeling a card can give. if can make a Handmade greeting card, it will be very nice.
