How to Sanitize Fruits and Vegetables- COVID-19

As you know the whole world battles the COVID-19 global pandemic, practicing proper food safety and handling fresh product which you buy from outside is very important concern. Some governments had started to provide guidelines to grocery stores and fruits and vegetable market to ensure make safe as possible during this corona virus outbreak.

            Unfortunately, we don’t know much about COVID-19 that how long it lives on different surface. Some study suggests that it can live in air for several hours and on some surface for 1 to 3 days. That’s why if someone with COVID-19 coughed or sneezed in any grocery or super markets, there could be coronavirus on them.

            So when you buy grocery or fruits and vegetable from outside its very important to sanitize them before use. Here are some tips about how to sanitize you fruits and vegetable:-

  • First of all wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, as soon as you arrive home from grocery store or market.
  • Now take all vegetables and fruits in bowl and discard polythene in a dustbin and again wash your hands with soap and water.
  • Wash vegetables and fruits under a running tap and rub them under water and put in another clean bowl separately.
  • Peel and cooking vegetable should also wash properly.
  • Always wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling raw food, including vegetables.
  • Keep raw food, including vegetables, separate from ready to eat foods.
  • Clean knives and other utensil thoroughly after using them.
  • Some vegetables are visibly bruised, so remove the damaged part and wash again before use.
  • It is important to remove the most outer layer of some vegetable like lettuce or cabbage.
  • Washing you fruits and vegetable with soap, detergent or any commercial product are not recommended. However you can use a scrub for clean vegetable.
  • After washing, you can use any clean cloth or disposable paper towel to rinse all fruits and vegetable.
  • Store in a clean place or refrigerate your items which require refrigeration.
