Stuttering is a very common problem as most of the children stutter a lot when they are between ages of 2 and 5. This is crucial time of language and speech development. Although, stutter persist for couple of months but with time and growth of child it comes to an end. While on other hand, many times it is seen that stuttering persist in adulthood. So, no matter whether or not your child’s stammer is permanent or temporary you should know everything through which you can help your child in stuttering.

What stammering is actually? 

Stammering or stuttering is basically a speech disorder and occurs when normal speech is continuously interrupted by extension or repetition of certain words or sounds. It can range in intensity and frequency from mild to severe.

Talking on the telephone or even speaking in front of group can aggravate this condition. But, at the same time reading or singing can help in reducing stuttering. Stress is something which makes this problem worse. Most of the time, this struggle is accompanied with hands movements or physical gestures.

There are many causes because of which children stammer. Some of the main causes include genetic problem, neurological factors, development stuttering and more. These are some factors, but still experts are not able to get specific cause of this problem.

How to deal with stuttering? 

Parents can have enormous effect on how stammering child feel comfortable in expressing his ability and view his disorders. There are so many tips which parents can follow to deal with their stammering child. Following are some best tips that can be considered –

Be supportive – You should respond to speech difficulty in same way you would have done with any difficulties which arise as they develop more and more skills. If you feel that it is appropriate knowledge, then do not feel criticized. Avoid labeling stammering as much difficult. You can also prefer to use expressions like getting stuck or bumpy speech or also ask your child for her own descriptions and words.

Observe the way of interaction – Try to increase that time which you give towards your child to make your message reach them. It is important to listen to them carefully and they have enough time for talking. Try to decrease interruptions, rapid speech patterns, questions and criticisms.

Reduce number of questions – Being a parent, it is your responsibility that you should give enough time for asking one question after another. It reduces pressure. Try to keep the sentences short and do not ask too many questions, at one time.

Several ways are there which can be taken into consideration to help your stammering child. Above mentioned are few which are worth investing in.
