How to become a sperm donor?

Becoming a sperm donor isn’t as simple as you may have thought. In fact, you rarely find suitable donors. On an overage, just % of all the people meets the correct specs and requirement to donate. If you are thinking of becoming a sperm donor, then you need to acknowledge the specifications, procedure, time involved and rate of success.

First of all, you need to speak one of your fertility clinic online or via call to express your desire to be a sperm donor and get requirement list to check your eligibility.

1.       You should be between the ages of 20 to 39 and at least be 5 feet 7 inches in height.

2.       You should make a one-year commitment to the service.

3.       You should live in 25 miles of your clinic.

4.       You should give your all medical info and both sides of your family history.

5.       You should visit the clinic one every week.

6.       Disclose if you have any chronic health issue. If you are infected with HIV, hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Genital Herpes, Syphilis or warts, then you cannot sign in the application form.

a)       Go for the first conversation with the fertility clinic and get the clinic contact and fill the application form of sperm donor.

b)      The next step is determining your eligibility. If your application gets accepted, then you will be contacted by the Donor Coordinator to organize a Test Donation Appointment. The very first step will be the test of your sperm sample. Usually only those candidates with higher sperm count are selected for this purpose. The sample is evaluated and if it meets the donation criteria, then you are asked to come back.

c)       The clinic also takes your blood sample for assessment. This includes:

          Determination of your blood group

          Screening for common genetic diseases

          Check-up of sexually transmitted diseases

d)      After this the donor coordinator will take a brief history of your family biological history. And you leave another sperm sample.

e)      If both your test donations meet the eligibility criteria of the lab i.e. sperm count, semen quality then you are invited for screening and testing.

f)        In order to get the best chance of acceptable sperm count, you should avoid ejaculating for 3 days, but more than 4 days of abstinence isn’t needed.

g)       Along with the sample, you also need to go for screening for genetic diseases. You need to write a personal description and give a baby picture of yours.

h)      You may also have a medical exam.

i)        After this the counseling team of the clinic will meet you explain the donation procedure and talk about the legalities involved. At this time, you can talk about your rights and rights of those who will get your sperm and regarding the baby born.

j)        You can now start donating. You will be asked to donate weekly for the first 6 months. You will be screened time to time to make sure that you are free from any kind of infection. The sperm will be quarantined for half a year. Being an approved donor, your blood and urine test and physical examination are paid by the clinic.

k)       After the 6-month quarantine period is finished, you will get some info about you which is registered with HFEA. You may write about yourself for the recipients to read.

l)        After the quarantine period is over, you will be rescreened for a blood test. If your results are clear, then your sperm will become available to be used by the needy to start their families.

The sperm donors aren’t considered the legit fathers of the kids conceived from their sperm which was donated by fertility’s sperm donation program. Thus, you have no legal or fiscal responsibility for any kid born from your sperm via donation nor you enjoy any parental rights. Further, if you are approved as donor, then you will be made to sign a contract which protects your privacy and mentions all the dos and don’ts of the procedure. So, read the contract thoroughly before signing it and then enjoy the benefits of a donor for your upcoming life. It is surely one big responsibility.
